Highly celebrated video game The Last of Us, launched on PS3 in June 2013, has bagged a spot in the prestigious World Video Game Hall of Fame this year.
The epic action-adventure game features a stunning cast, beautiful and haunted environment, and background score by Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla. It garnered mass commercial as well as critical success and was recently made into a TV show. The game was extremely well received, with IGN, Game Informer, and VideoGamer scoring it 10/10, and Metacritic giving it a 95/100.
Naughty Dog, the developer of this game, has already received several prestigious awards, including the game of the year awards by several publications. However, this latest one certainly is the most prestigious feather in the studio’s hat.
Apart from the Last of Us, three more titles were inducted in the World Video Game Hall of Fame this year, including Wii Sports, Computer Space, and Barbie Fashion Designer. Other finalists that didn’t make the cut into the hall of fame included Age of Empires, NBA 2K, Angry Birds, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Wizardry, FIFA International Soccer, GoldenEye 007, and Quake.
The Last of Us has also been adapter into a TV series by HBO
The World Video Game Hall of Fame induces games based on a variety of parameters. Most prominently, however, they judge the popularity of the title over the years, as well as the level of impact created by the title on the public.
Over the past decade, The Last of Us series (that includes over 9 chapters) has been in the limelight. It has inspired several legacy productions, including a comic book series as well as an HBO TV series that premiered in January 2023. The TV series, alike the games, was considered to be a huge hit, receiving praise from both audiences and critics alike. The studio has also released a remake of the original game for next-gen consoles, such as PS5, in Sept 2022.
