NetherRealm, developer of the Mortal Kombat series, has been consistently teasing the next title in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 1. Rumors of this game have been surfacing for the better part of this year, with the creators periodically tweeting ambiguous teasers through twitter.
Here’s what we currently know about the upcoming Mortal Kombat title. Mortal Kombat 1, as the name suggests, is rumored to be a series reboot, featuring a brand-new storyline.
UPDATE: Mortal Kombat 1 trailer rumored to be releasing on May 18. Speculations suggest a gameplay trailer reveal might happen at the PlayStation Showcase 2023.
Mortal Kombat 1 release date rumors, platforms, and pricing
Some leakers have predicted that the game will be releasing in September 2023 on all platforms. There is no official word on the release date of Mortal Kombat 1 as of yet. However, with Ed Boon’s recent tweet, we might get that info pretty soon.
A popular gaming leakster billbil-kun first shared the title of the upcoming game- Mortal Kombat 1. He claims that the title will be featured on next-gen consoles, i.e. PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, as well as Nintendo Switch. He has also made predictions about the game’s price. However, when asked by followers about the source, he has maintained silence.

According to billbil-kun, the title will be offered in the following editions:
- The Standard edition is priced at $69.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the Nintendo Switch version will cost $59.99.
- The Premium edition will cost $109.99.
- The Kollector’s edition will cost $249.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is supposed to be a physical-only edition and will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but not on Nintendo Switch.
New guest characters in Mortal Kombat 1
NetherRealm has a history of including new guest characters in each of the series’ installments. According to various leakers, we have information about some of the rumored guest characters that are anticipated to make a debut in Mortal Kombat 1. These include:
- Homelander from HBO series The Boys
- Conan the Barbarian
- Peacemaker from DC Universe
The gaming community is still unsure as to if these characters will be available for play in the title itself or make an appearance as optional/additional DLCs.
Return of the classic modes
It has also been rumored that Mortal Kombat 1 will feature some of the series’ popular modes, absent from some of the previous installments. This rumor originated after the game’s creator Ed Boon took a Twitter poll, asking the fans which of the classic modes they would like to see return.
