Palaeoctopus are big and menacing in appearance; they are different from other creatures we tamed before, like a Ferox or Astrocetus. They are basically giant octopuses ready to devour you with their tiny mouths. But we will be feeding the creature through their tiny mouth to tame the animal to serve us. Here, in this guide, I will focus on the items you will need to tame a live Palaeoctopus in ARK Survival Ascended.
Palaeoctopus Location in ARK: Survival Ascended

Palaeoctopus are typically found on the Genesis Ocean map; they are found in multiple spots. To make it easier, I’ve marked the spots on the image above to give you all the neat little areas where you will encounter Palaeoctopus creatures, with the details about Latitude (Lat) and Longitude (Lng). All three locations on the map will have a Palaeoctopus roaming around the spot. You can’t miss them, as their red-colored skin can be seen easily from miles away in the deep blue ocean.
Preparation
Before getting to the location to start the taming process, you will need a few items: Narcotic or Biotoxin; these are the two items we will need to feed the Palaeoctopus to start the taming process.
- Finding Narcotics: It can be crafted by adding Narcoberries x5 or Ascerbic Mushroom and Spoiled Meat x1 via Mortar and Pestle.
- Finding Biotoxin: Kill and skin the Cnidaria jellyfish near oceanic areas to get Biotoxins. It can also be gathered from Spore-inducing Mushrooms.
Tip: I recommend Biotoxin over Narcotic because Biotoxin provides 80 Torpor compared to 40 on Narcotics. This will make the creature knock out faster with just a few doses than taking the Narcotics route.
Taming The Palaeoctopus

Once you have tracked down the spot for Palaeoctopus, the next thing to do is to start the taming process. You will come across Palaeoctopus on the surface; if you get lucky, you will find them hiding in plain sight on the land. Their skin will camouflage with the surroundings, making them quite tricky to spot.
Note: You can tame the Palaeoctopus underwater and also on land. I prefer to carry out this action on land instead of water, because it’s so much easier. You will see Palaeoctopus underwater; do your best to lure it to the coast. If they are way too deep underwater, they will flee, so it is always better to lure them to the surface.
- The next step is to get closer to the Palaeoctopus and let the creature grab you intentionally. That’s right, you have to be grabbed by one of Palaeoctopus’ tentacles to feed the item to start the taming process. The mouth of the Palaeoctopus is hidden under its body; the creature will only lift up its entire body once it grabs you by your leg.
Note: Do clear out nearby creatures, or they will cause interference to the taming process.
- Once the Palaeoctopus’ tentacles grab your leg, it will start hanging your body in the air for a couple of seconds, then the tentacle will move your body to the mouth underneath the Palaeoctopus.

- Here you will see the Palaeoctopus’ mouth, shape of a bird’s beak, chomping or biting the air. You will get the prompt on the HUD telling you to feed the Palaeoctopus, but don’t do it. Here, you must get your timing right. Once the Palaeoctopus’ mouth stops moving (Chomping or biting), the screen will shake for a few milliseconds; that’s it.
- Use the shake as an indicator to feed the Palaeoctopus with some Biotoxins or Narcotics. The screen shake happens with a roar out of the tiny mouth, so you also have a visual indicator to track down the perfect timing to feed.
Note: Feeding the Palaeoctopus early will not put your body in danger. You will just get a notification stating it’s too early to feed.
Crafting the Saddle for Palaeoctopus
You need to repeat this action many times to completely tame the Palaeoctopus. Once tamed, you can ride and breed the Palaeoctopus as you wish. Unlike Ferox, where you can ride the creature without any saddle, with Palaeoctopus, you will need to craft one.
You will unlock the Palaeoctopus Saddle at Level 65 by spending 20 Engram Points. You will also need the following list of materials to craft the saddle at the Smithy, Tek Replicator:
- Hide x275
- Fiber x150
- Scrap Metal Ingot or Metal Ingot x50
- Wood or Fungal Wood x75
- Chitin, Keratin, or Shell Fragment x20
That’s after crafting the saddle; put it on the Palaeoctopus and start riding around anywhere in ARK Survival Ascended.
