Setting

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is set in 9th-century Iraq, in the city of Baghdad. The game starts off just as the Middle Eastern golden age dawns in 861 AD. Chronologically, this is one of the earliest games to take place in the Assassin’s Creed universe, set a few decades before the events of the last entry in the series, AC Valhalla.

As the game’s Artistic Director Jean-Luc Sala puts it, Baghdad, at the time, is essentially the center of the civilized world, being ‘a key place for knowledge, art, innovation, science, commerce, and power’. A huge bustling city with loads happening everywhere makes for a perfect setting for a game based on core elements of stealth, creative traversal, and sneaky assassinations.

Baghdad in AC Mirage will feature four separate districts. Two of them have been revealed, which include the industrial area known as Karhk, and the Round City, which houses lush gardens and serves as the beating heart of Baghdad. The map is supposed to be filled with shops, buskers, and a massive number of residents. Apart from Baghdad, players will be able to visit The Alamut from time to time. The Alamut lies outside the city and serves as the base for Assassins.

How Big Is AC Mirage’s Map?

Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s total map size is 45 km², while the playable area is only 13 km². This data comes from Youtuber DG VFX who triangulated in-game objective markers to calculate the area of the whole map.

Story of Basim

In this sprawling metropolis, players will take on the journey of Basim Ibn Is’haq, a street urchin from a nearby town. The game is based on the journey of Basim from a common thief to a master assassin, as seen in the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

According to the Narrative Director of the game, Sarah Beaulieu, AC Mirage will ‘follow the transformation of a defiant young man into a refined master assassin with a conflicted destiny’. The game offers players a chance to explore the mysterious and shadowy beginnings of the Hidden Ones and chart the organization’s future.

According to the development team at Ubisoft, this game will feature a ‘narrative structure (that) is much closer to the first Assassin’s Creed games’. This means the story will be more linear and driven, as opposed to the heavy open-world themes featured in some of the most recent entries in the franchise. While AC Mirage will allow players to freely explore the game’s map and choose from multiple side quests and smaller missions, the game’s main story is said to be ‘very intense and condensed.’

Players will have to complete certain main story missions in order to unlock new abilities, weapons, and skills. Progressing through the story in a linear fashion will be required to further upgrade them. However, apart from these essential missions dubbed as ‘Black Box missions’ by developers, players will be free to explore the various districts of Baghdad at their own speed and amusement. These essential missions will be scattered across the map, offering players a chance to select their own path to the destination.

Gameplay

Through Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Ubisoft is going back to the very beginnings of the series and focusing on what made it a success to begin with. The new game will focus more on the series’ staples and USPs – social stealth, imaginative parkour, and fast-paced assassinations. According to the developers, AC Mirage will feature a ‘modern take on gameplay and iconic features of the early games’.

The gameplay style is supposed to vary greatly from some of the last entries in the series, with a more focused approach to the progression of various abilities and skills through the completion of the main story. The map is also supposed to be smaller than the last few entries, offering a narrower focus (compared especially to the massive map of AC Valhalla) for players to complete the main narrative.

Stealth

According to Ubisoft, AC Mirage will have a strong focus on stealth more than any of the games released recently. The primary goal of players will be to sneak around and identify their targets, hunt and stalk them, wait for a perfect opportunity to strike them, eliminate them quietly, and vanish. Ubisoft has supposedly overhauled the detection systems used in previous games to offer a thrilling experience.

The map of the game has also been designed meticulously to offer numerous vantage points for stealth approaches and places to hide. The game will also feature several new tools that can help the players escape a particularly tricky situation while maintaining their cover. Some of these include classic blow darts and a brand new ‘Detection Mine’, which emits a cloud of smoke when triggered, offering players a chance for a quick escape or identifying a target or threat from afar.

Parkour

Similar to stealth, another popular element of the AC series, parkour is also set to play a huge role in this game. Players can creatively and speedily traverse the many rooftops in ancient Baghdad. Ubisoft has created a densely packed and multi-layered map of the city to ‘speed up the pace of parkour’.

The developer claims that players will be able to move fast and traverse the game’s map through various series’ staple and iconic parkour moves. In addition to classics like corner swing, a major new parkour move coming to AC Mirage is pole vault. This move will help players clear large obstacles and un-jumpable gaps between rooftops.

How Long To Beat

AC Mirage is set to be smaller than AC Valhalla, Odyssey, and Origins – both in terms of map size, as well as gameplay duration. According to Ubisoft, it would take players 20 to 23 hours to complete the main story of the game, while exploring everything and completing all the side quests (100%ing) would take five or six more hours.

A lot of fans have been shocked by such as smaller duration, as the last entry, AC Valhalla, took around 60 hours to complete the main story. However, according to the developers, they want to take the series back to its roots, with a condensed, yet action-filled narrative.

Does AC Mirage Have Denuvo?

Yes, AC Mirage has the Denuvo Anti-tamper DRM.

Ubisoft added Denuvo to Assassin’s Creed Mirage through a day-1 patch after the review embargoes were lifted. That means, all the pre-release reviews were done on copies of the game with no Denuvo DRM added on top. However, there have been no major reports of performance issues pertaining to Denuvo on AC Mirage.
