Mortal Shell 2’s difficulty setting requires you to find unique items and hand them over to the related NPCs. If you wish to challenge yourself further, then you can’t go wrong with unlocking Night Mode. This is the game’s equivalent of playing the game in Hard mode, and there are several changes that will take place once the lands are covered in darkness.
Changing the day-night cycle requires finding a unique item in the overworld, and I have detailed a quick way to get the Gloombound Flame, where to use it, and what happens when night falls.
How to Unlock Night in Mortal Shell 2

The game has a unique way to change the day and night cycle, and you can’t change it through the in-game settings. Rather, you need to collect a unique item called Gloombound Flame and use it in a particular area to bring about nighttime. To find Gloombound Flame, make your way to the Widow’s Overlook beacon near your starting area. Turn around from the beacon and head down the slope.
Walk towards the large burnt clearing and investigate the large altars. You will find one holding a glowing object. Pick it up to collect the Gloombound Flame. After that, return to Marrow’s Keep and head all the way up the tower. After reaching the roof, place the Gloombound Flame inside the lantern nearby. This will summon Thestus, and you can talk to him to summon the Night. To change the cycle back to day, return to Thestus anytime to do so.
What Does the Night Cycle Do

Enemies that spawn during the night are tougher and more challenging than the ones that appear during the day. Nighttime enemies deal more damage and have more HP, but the estimates can vary. In return for this high-risk experience, you also collect a lot more Gloom rewards during exploration.
These aren’t the only perks available during Night mode. There are a few unique nighttime structures that will appear if you look close enough. So far, I could find a special first-person dungeon called the Shrine of Sorrows during my exploration of Mushroom Village at night. This area is quite high-level, so I recommend coming back here after upgrading your weapons and being more efficient in combat.

Another point to keep an eye out for are certain interactable structures that will reveal a pop-up message. These messages will inform that you need to check the same POIs only at night. Change the day cycle to see what that’s all about. Who knows, you might find some rare treasure hidden here.
There could be other areas to explore, new NPCs, and new questlines to pick up in the dark, so keep an eye out for them during your time here.
