Black Panther is the newest superhero from Marvel Universe that is getting his own AAA game. EA’s new studio will be creating this third-person, single-player game with an original story. Electronic Arts has announced the creation of a brand-new studio, Cliffhanger Games Studio, whose first production will be this game.
The upcoming game is still untitled; however, we know that the Seatle-based Cliffhanger Games Studio will be making a ‘superhero sandbox’ game that promises to offer players ‘more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game.’

EA has released a short video that features the logo for this upcoming title. According to Electronic Arts, the upcoming game will offer players and fans of the character an authentic and definitive Black Panther experience. The studio has stated that its mission is to develop a complex and detailed world of Wakanda that players can explore. While the character has been made playable in other Marvel games, such as Marvel’s Avengers, there has been no standalone game for the immensely popular superhero.
EA is also working on a standalone AAA game featuring another popular member of the Avengers, Iron Man.
The Black Panther game’s development team is led by ex-Monolith head Kevin Stephens
The freshly minted Cliffhanger Games Studio is headed by Kevin Stephens, who has been the studio head of Monolith Productions, the studio behind various popular titles such as Middle-earth: Shadow of War and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Cliffhanger Games is currently in the midst of hiring talent for the upcoming Black Panther game. As it stands, they already house developers with a rich background in other big-budget games, including Halo, Call of Duty, and God of War.
This is the second Black Panther project currently under work, the first being an action-adventure game set in the period of World War 2, featuring Captain America and Black Panther. That game is being developed by Skydance New Media, led by the former creative director of the Uncharted series, Amy Hennig.
The announcement for EA’s Black Panther title comes at an opportune time, as today marks the 57th anniversary of the character’s debut in the Marvel Comics Fantastic Four No. 52, released on July 10, 1966.
