How to Enter the Vault with the Makeshift Vault Key in Dragon’s Dogma 2

In Dragon’s Dogma 2, you’ll find a lot of items that don’t necessarily seem useful. Some of them are extremely valuable, even if their description doesn’t suggest they should be. Some other items sound like they should help you a lot, but they don’t really. The Makeshift Vault Key, despite not sounding like much, is an item it’s difficult to ignore.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 – How to Enter the Vault with the Makeshift Vault Key

In case you wound up on this page without actually possessing the Makeshift Vault Key, you might wonder where you can find it. The answer is that you find it in the Ancient Battleground area, right as you finish escorting Oskar through the Tolled to Rest side quest. It’s in the room where he rings the bell. You can take the Makeshift Vault Key with you when you visit the vault in Vernworth Castle.

Once you have the Makeshift Vault Key in your possession, return to Vernworth. Travel to the Noble Quarter, which you enter not far from the West Vernworth Oxcart Station. Proceed uphill, where your pawns will let you know they can’t follow you. As you continue onward from there, the main Vernworth Castle building is hard to miss. It’s on the far side of the plaza area. By daylight, you are free to enter through its front doors.

Inside the castle itself, head immediately along the corridor that branches off to your left. Follow it past the entrance to a hallway that leads off to your right. Continue until you arrive at the base of some stairs that ascend directly ahead of you. Instead of climbing those stairs, head to your right and pass through that archway.

Follow the next corridor without passing through any doors or openings to either side. The corridor descends along multiple sets of stairs until you arrive at reinforced doors with a guard posted. The guard, Azorka, won’t allow you to enter. That’s true even when you’re dressed in the Marcher’s gear. Acquiring the key doesn’t seem to have done you any good. If you’re like me, now you want to enter that vault even more. Fortunately, you can.

A brazen vault robbery

As far as I can tell, the only way to get into the vault is to wait until nightfall. Just as darkness falls, Disa comes to visit the vault. She even relieves Azorka. Stand at the top of the stairs, dressed in Marcher’s gear, and watch that event occur. Then, watch Azorka head along the hallway until she disappears into the distant murk. Quickly save your progress, in case something goes wrong. If it does, you can back out to the title screen and load your save to try again without having to wait.

Your next step is to head down the stairs and enter the vault. It is not locked while Disa is making her inspection. Typically, she waits somewhere off to the right as you enter, provided you followed the timing outlined above. You can start your search by checking the treasure chest along the left side of the room. However, the queen doesn’t stay in one place. She tours the room’s perimeter. If she gets close, even if objects block her line of sight, she sees you and calls for the guards.

As you raid the vault, make sure you keep your distance from the queen. Imagine an invisible bubble around her. If you come within the range of that bubble, you get arrested. Otherwise, you’re free to loot all of the chests.

The chests contain a lot of nice stuff: 20000 G, the Decayed Medusa Head, Daughter of the Evening, the Wyrmhunter’s Cloak, and the Ring of Reassurance. Grab all of it and exit without getting near Disa. Once you’re certain you’ve made a clean getaway, save your progress and resume your regularly scheduled adventure.
