Dragonsword Awakening has a ton of characters and team compositions to try out, but if you want to know the best characters out of these, then you have come to the right place. I have analyzed the kit and synergy of every character available at launch to bring you some of the best units that you should consider unlocking first. These will help you out in the long run, as the early game will be easier to clear, and your best units will be prepared for the endgame.
Best Characters To Unlock First in Dragonsword Awakening

Here are the best units you should try to prioritise in Dragonsword Awakening (in whichever order you prefer):
- Charlotte
- Reina
- Cerese
- Othello
- Kalien
- Theresia
Charlotte

Reasons: Beginner-friendly, fun, fast-playing style
Although Charlotte might not be the best unit in the endgame (for now), that does not mean that you should shy away from using her. Charlotte is on this list for two reasons: her high mobility gameplay, combined with her damage-dealing capabilities. Her combos are not the hardest to perform, and thus, great for a beginner looking to get into the game.
Reina

Reason: Easy-to-use, juggling playstyle, good team compositions
If you use Reina once, you will likely not want to switch out. This is because she can slaughter most of the weaker enemies in the game without any issue. She is adept at breaking armor, and once that happens, the fight is basically over. If you can execute her combos well enough, then the enemy has no chance of ever touching the floor again. This locks them into an infinite cycle out of which escape becomes nigh-impossible.
She also has some great team compositions with some of the other units which will be discussed below.
Cerese

Reason: Crowd control, amazing team synergy
Cerese is one of the best crowd controllers in the game at the moment. She can group up all the enemies on the screen into her storm, breaking armor, juggling them in the air, all while dealing damage of her own. When combined with Othello and Reina, she becomes one of the most useful units in the game. However, even without those two, she is a formidable controller in her own right and can definitely be unlocked first without any regrets.
Othello

Reason: High DPS, good endgame teams
Othello has previously been mentioned as a potential teammate for Cerese. Even outside of these teams, he can be a great starting choice due to his damage ceiling. However, his potential is only fully unleashed inside a team built around maximizing his damage. So, Othello is one of the best characters to unlock early in Dragonsword Awakening, but you will definitely want his proper team alongside him.
Kalien

Reason: Ranged, high DPS, good synergy
Kalien is one of the few ranged characters in the game, and she can make you feel safe while also doing a lot of damage. Melee characters will always be at risk while attacking enemies. This is something that a ranged unit does not have to worry about. In a proper team, Kalien can deal a lot of damage, with a safety net between you and the enemies. If you are looking for a ranged unit in this game, then Kalien should be your first pick.
Theresia

Reason: Stun, Bleed, good DPS, decent range for a melee unit
Theresia can play two different roles within a team. You can either use her to stun enemies, allowing your other teammates to get free hits in, or you can build her alongside a good Bleed team, letting you whittle away at your enemies’ health over time. However, on top of all this, her flails have a pretty good area of effect, allowing you to hit enemies which would normally be out of your range. These reasons make Theresia one of the best characters to unlock early in Dragonsword Awakening.
