Popular MMORPG, Old School RuneScape (OSRS), is set to receive a major graphical overhaul with the introduction of an official HD mode. Jagex, the game’s developer, announced the update during their recent Winter Summit, along with plans for an official client plugin API. There is both a video and a blog post for you to see.
The new HD mode aims to enhance the game’s visuals while preserving its classic aesthetic, as you can see from the video below. Players will have the option to switch between HD and the existing SD (standard definition) mode at any time. The HD mode will be powered by Jagex’s in-house renderer, Runetek, allowing for features like dynamic lighting, fog, and improved anti-aliasing.
“At its core, HD Mode has always been about keeping Old School RuneScape’s unique visual identity safe, while embracing the enhanced graphical features players have come to expect from their games,” Jagex stated in their blog post. They promised many opportunities to provide input through beta tests and other initiatives. A playable Alpha is planned for imminent release, followed by an ongoing Beta.
Personally, I love Old School RuneScape, having played it back when it was called “RuneScape 2” and the one before it was the “old RuneScape.” However, its graphics are dated, and getting to do the old stuff with a new look is pretty cool. I like how it all looks.
Runetek’s capabilities extend beyond the initial HD features. Jagex has already begun work on a brand-new water system with optional real-time reflections, slated for release before the Sailing skill update. Skydome technology is also being explored, which would introduce weather effects like clouds in Gielinor’s 20-year history. Point lights and emissive materials will also allow for glowing fires, magical effects, and illuminated projectiles.
The official client plugin API is another significant upcoming feature. Inspired by the popular RuneLite client’s plugin library, the API will let players use the official client’s plugins on both PC and mobile versions. The initial rollout is expected within a few months.
